Katie Wolfgang had a long day and a longer trip to the season opener in Susquehanna than the rest of the Wyoming Area girls basketball team.
After making her way to the game from Schuylkill County where she attended a memorial service for her grandfather who died earlier in the week, Wolfgang turned in an inspired performance to help make it a successful opener for the Warriors.
Wolfgang scored 14 points and provided a variety of plays that helped support Sarah Holweg’s 31-point effort in a 63-41 win in the non-league game.
“Katie probably played our best overall, end-to-end game,” Wyoming Area coach Chad Lojewski said in a telephone interview after the game. “She just seemed to be all over the ball and on the floor. Any time there was a loose ball, she was on it. She’s such a hustler. She’s a trooper.
“It’s a tribute to her commitment that she wanted to be here for the team. She even got there in time for the JV game because she wanted to be there to support the girls.”
Wolfgang hit a pair of 3-pointers and went 4-for-8 from the line.
Holweg picked up the scoring that helped make her the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 co-Player of the Year last season. She had nine points in the second quarter and 10 in the third as Wyoming Area stretched a 14-8 lead to 53-24 before using many different players in the fourth quarter.
Addison Orzel added nine points.
“Addison Orzel was probably our leading rebounder,” Lojewski said. “She had a nice game inside.”
Wyoming Area outscored Susquehanna, 21-8, in the second quarter and 18-8 in the third quarter.
“We picked up our defensive intensity in the second and third quarters,” Lojewski said. “We started to get a couple transitional baskets off steals.”
Wyoming Area continues its non-league schedule with games Monday at Mountain View and Saturday at home against Montoursville.
