DALLAS TWP. —The Wyoming Area boys lacrosse team were poised for an upset in the opening round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 Boys Lacrosse Championships on Thursday.

Corey McAndrew held off Wyoming Area long enough for Cory Metz to put the Warriors away.

McAndrew made 14 saves and Metz scored three straight goals as Dallas fought off an upset bid to post a 7-3 win over Wyoming Area.

Dallas, which has played in all five championship games since District 2 began conducting boys lacrosse playoffs, had trouble early with Wyoming Area, which is in just its second season.

It would have made the Warriors’ season to add a playoff upset after rising from one win a year ago to 5-5 in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

Justin Joseph, Jake Urban and Alex Hawk each scored for the Warriors in the loss.

“We had our opportunities,” Wyoming Area coach Shaun Rohland said. “We had some shots on cage, but they didn’t go our way.”

Dallas got out of trouble and gradually gained more possession and scoring chances. Other than the first half of the second quarter, the Mountaineers held a 33-13 lead in shots.

Joseph ended more than 32 minutes without a score for Wyoming Area by connecting with 59 seconds left.
