Upon Further Review: Wyoming Area’s softball team won PIAA District 2 title in 1976

May 2006

A total of 42 medals were won by Pittston Area and Wyoming Area athletes at the PIAA District 2 Class AAA Track and Field Championships held at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

Four Pittston Area athletes were triple medalists: Eric Fay, Lauren Shovlin, Sara Mandicott and Alicia Bryk. Wyoming Area’s Kaitlyn Spak was closest to gold, when she won a silver in the 110 hurdles, missing the gold by o.31 seconds. Frank Redmond was the only athlete to qualify for the PIAA Championships after his second place finish in the 800.

Wyoming Area and Pittston Area boys came in seventh and eight place, respectively. PA girls finished fifth, while WA finished 12th.

May 1996

Pittston Area’s John Dessoye won three gold medals at the PIAA District 2 Class AAA Track and Field Championships at North Pocono.

Dessoye won gold medals in the 100 and 200, along with the long jump. He eclipsed his 100 District 2 record with a 10.39 in the time trials. In the 200, Dessoye set another D2 record with a time of 21.8. Dessoye’s brother, Matt, finished sixth in the 200.

May 1986

In the Wilkes-Barre Recreation Softball League, Miller’s Economy picked up a 9-7 win over Leo’s Angels.

Miller’s had 13 hits, including a home run and four RBI from Kim Kretchner. Judy Lemmond had a double, while Nadine Greco had three singles. Pitcher Mooch Marianacci was credited with the win.

May 1976

The Wyoming Area softball team won the PIAA District 2 championship with an 8-1 win. The Warriors went on to play in the state championships at Shippensburg State College.

At states, Wyoming Area and Stroudsburg High School were locked in a 6-6 tie after seven innings. Stroudsburg scored a run in the 10th to get the win. Sandy Selenski, Nadine Greco and Cathy Pope all hit doubles for the Warriors. Pope took the tough-luck loss in the circle.

Pittston Area’s Lauren Shovlin finished third in the long jump at the PIAA District 2 Track and Field Championships in 2006.
