Pittston Area graduate Amanda Wascavich was named the ABC Trophy Inc. Athlete of the Week as a freshman on the women’s tennis team at East Stroudsburg University.
During the week, Wascavich won a point in all five matches for the Warriors and won four singles matches. Amanda, from Avoca, was named the Sunday Dispatch Female Student/Athlete of the Year in 2005. Wascavich (now Carmody) is the current coach of the Pittston Area tennis teams.
March 1996
The eighth grade St. John the Baptist boys basketball team won the Wyoming Valley League Playoff Championship with a 41-28 win over Holy Rosary.
Members of the team were Michael Kulazavich, Joseph McCabe, Robert Zbysheski, Jeffrey Mohn, Matthew Calabro, Cody Kunigel, Michael Trowbridge, Marc Destefano, Jonathan Coyle, Sean Healey, Jason Tomashunas, Jason Walsh, Nicholas Kravitz and Gregory Mehalchick. The team was coached by Robert Kaluzavich.
March 1986
Bernie VanBuskirk, a two-time All-Scholastic lineman for Wyoming Area, signed a letter of intent to play football at Millersville University.
VanBuskirk was a four-year letterwinner for Paul Marranca’s Warriors. As a senior, he was named co-captain.
March 1976
The girls basketball team of St. Mary’s School in Avoca captured its first championship in the Wyoming Valley Grade School Girls Basketball League.
The girls posted a 17-3 overall record and came in second place in two local basketball tournaments. The team was coached by Ellen Lawler and Maribeth Gilhooley.
