Wyoming Area and Pittston Area learned their football opponents and track and field divisional alignments for the next two school years during Wyoming Valley Conference meetings on consecutive days this week.
In separate, simultaneous meetings, the Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association and Wyoming Valley Conference approved a cooperative football scheduling plan Wednesday.
WVC athletic directors met again the next day. In that meeting, they established the track and field divisional alignments for the 2019 and 2020 seasons and continued discussion on golf realignment for the next two years. Cross country was also discussed, but no changes were made for that sport.
Wyoming Area will play more small schools than in the past because enrollment changes have dropped it across the threshold separating big schools and small schools in many sports for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s next two-year cycle.
Pittston Area’s changes are less significant.
The Wyoming Area football schedule will include Mid Valley, Northwest, Nanticoke, Lake-Lehman, Meyers and Hanover Area instead of Wallenpaupack, Crestwood, Berwick, Dallas, Williamsport and Scranton Prep.
Pittston Area’s schedule will include West Scranton, Williamsport and Scranton Prep instead of Valley View, GAR and Abington Heights.
Wyoming Area and Pittston Area will continue to meet in the 10th week, in the final game of the regular season.
Home sites have not been determined yet for the next two years.
Wyoming Area will play, in order, Mid Valley, Coughlin, Northwest, Nanticoke, GAR, Lake-Lehman, Meyers, Holy Redeemer, Hanover Area and Pittston Area.
The Patriots will play, in order, Nanticoke, Berwick, Tunkhannock, Dallas, Coughlin, West Scranton, Williamsport, Scranton Prep, Crestwood and Wyoming Area.
Four teams will change divisions for boys’ and girls’ track and field in the next two school years. They will remain in their previous divisions for the spring of 2018.
“Everybody will stay the same except Wyoming Area and Tunkhannock will move down to Division 2 and Berwick and Nanticoke will move up to Division 1, due to enrollment numbers,” Wyoming Area athletic director/track coach Joe Pizano said.
Track teams meet each other once each in the WVC schedule.
Pittston Area remains in Division 1, along with Hazleton Area, Coughlin, Dallas, Crestwood and Wyoming Valley West.
Meyers, Hanover Area, Northwest, Lake-Lehman, GAR and Holy Redeemer are the teams that will remain in Division 2 and become Wyoming Area’s new opponents.
