When Serra Degnan was a senior on the Wyoming Area field hockey team, Bree Bednarski was just getting started at the varsity level.

Three years later, Bednarski has surpassed Degnan’s prowess in the sport. Bednarski broke the Wyoming Area field hockey career scoring record with a win over Hanover Area recently. Her then-69 career goals surpassed Degnan’s 68.

“It feels really good,” Bednarski said. “It’s a huge accomplishment not only for me but it’s a huge accomplishment for my teammates as well.”

Degnan is currently a starter on the Syracuse University field hockey team in her junior season. Bednarski has verbally committed to play Division 1 field hockey at the University of Michigan.

“She’s awesome,” Bednarski said of Degnan. “When I came up as a freshman it was so nice to learn from her.”

Wyoming Area coach Chris Comiskey didn’t have the privilege of coaching Degnan at Wyoming Area. However, for the past two seasons he’s been able to watch Bednarski play.

Comiskey has always been impressed with the drive Bednarski has to put the ball in the cage.

“You have to want to score when you get in the circle,” he said. “She’s willing to fight for it. She really fights in there and she’s willing to put her neck out for it.”

On Thursday, Sept. 17, Bednarski scored six goals against the Lady Hawkeyes to get to put her at 72 career goals. It was her second straight game with six goals. Since that time, Bednarski has been on a tear.

She currently sits at 84 goals heading into the second half of the season. Since her record-breaking night, Bednarski has 11 goals in her last three games.

“The feeling of putting the ball in the cage is awesome,” Bednarski said. “It comes natural to me and it feels really good.”

Bednarski is the daughter of Lyn and Joe Bednarski, Exeter. She has a sister, Drew, and a brother, Bret.
