Dupont’s Brandon Matthews shot 3-under-par, 141 for 36 holes at the Woodmont Country Club North Course in Rockville, Md. Monday, finishing tied for seventh among 50 players pursuing three spots in the U.S. Open.
Matthews had made it through local qualifying to the sectional event, which completed the field for the June 15-18 U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
Web.com Tour player Sam Ryder opened with a 62 and led qualifying with a 133.
Kyle Thompson, another Web.com Tour player, and former PGA Tour player Ben Bohles, also advanced by shooting 138.
A Pittston Area and Temple University graduate, Matthews finished one shot behind alternates T.J. Howe and Lanto Griffin.
The 22-year-old has earned $36,225 while winning one tournament and ranking fourth in the Order of Merit rankings on the PGA Latinoamerica Tour where his scoring average is 70.43.
Matthews went to U.S. Open Sectional qualifying directly from his first tournament of the season on the Web.com Tour, PGA’s top equivalent of the minor league. He tied for 60th at the Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh, N.C. June 1-4 with a 2-under-par, 282 to earn $1,625.
